The domestic construction methods, married with the ingenious building techniques imported from the Moorish motherlands, most likely contributed to the acceleration of the building process, as well as its fine quality and resilience. For instance, Moorish architects bred by the Cordoban caliphate were among the first to correct ceiling heights by prolonging the lengths of existing columns. Around the year 961, roughly four decades before the completion of the Mosque of Bab al-Mardum, Moorish architects introduced intersecting trefoil arches to the mainstream. The trefoil shape, essentially a combination of three circles – like the club symbol from a deck of playing cards, minus the stem – once again, pays tribute to the significance of the number three; Catholic architects later adopted the design as an homage to the Holy Trinity.
